Maro S. Houhanisin is a tenacious attorney, with both civil and criminal litigation experience. Her well-rounded background, coupled with her ability to handle complicated legal issues and cases, makes her a formidable advocate for her clients.

Ms. Houhanisin is a true litigator with a unique background and thrives on solving challenging legal issues for her clients. With her inherent ability to view cases from a full-picture perspective, Ms. Houhanisin has successfully litigated both civil and criminal matters since she began her legal career in 2013.

Ms. Houhanisin began her career as an assistant prosecuting attorney at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. She was tasked with handling sexual assault cases involving child and adult victims, including cold cases as the result of the backlog rape kit project in Detroit. Ms. Houhanisin was well known as a zealous advocate and worthy opponent in the courtroom, ultimately conducting over 40 trials.

In March 2019, Ms. Houhanisin left the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for civil litigation at Hewson & Van Hellemont PC. She focused her practice on insurance defense involving first and third-party claims as the result of automobile accidents, as well as homeowners and property damage claims. She quickly became a key attorney in the office and was made partner in December 2020. Ms. Houhanisin joined The Mike Cox Law Firm in September 2021, bringing her tireless work ethic to the team and her clients.

She is a firm believer in giving back to the community, and in mentoring the future generations of lawyers. In this spirit, Ms. Houhanisin served as an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law teaching second and third-year law students in a practical course focused on pre-trial criminal advocacy. Ms. Houhanisin continues to give back to local law schools by participating as a judge in mock trial and moot court competitions.

Outside of the office, Maro enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her rescue dog Louie. She is also an avid baker in her spare time.
